Standards meeting report – Motorised furniture - Nov - 2017
A meeting on the BSI committee FW/0/2 was recently held at FIRA’s headquarters in Stevenage.
The purpose of the meeting was to discussed the recent changes to the Machinery Directive guide which states that electrically actuated domestic furniture (such as recliner chairs, rise/recliner chairs, motorised beds and motorised kitchen storage furniture) is now covered by the Machinery Directive and such products need to be CE Marked.
Much of the delate centred on how to apply a Directive and standards that were written to cover industrial machines to domestic furniture. As such the meeting raised some serious concerns and a second meeting is planned in December where a representative of the Health & Safety Executive will be in attendance.
