REACH update: Brexit changes, additional chemical restrictions
The latest update concerning Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH) Regulations is now available via the link below to members of the Research Association.
Key things to note are an additional restriction on residual nonyl phenol ethoxylate (NPE), a substance historically used as a wetting agent in the processing of leathers and textiles. This would not apply to all upholstered furniture but it would include products (such as cushions) that contain removable coverings which could be intended to allow washing.
The update details further chemicals due to be added to the SVHC in 2021.
Finally, following Brexit, the management of chemicals and obligations under REACH changed for all companies in the UK. The exact nature of the changes will depend on what activities the organisation is involved with.
Author of the update, John Hubbard, Technical Consultant at our service provider, FIRA International, is hosting module REACH training over the coming months. Preferential training rates are available to members of the Furniture Industry Research Association as part of their membership benefits.
