REACH restriction on N,N-dimethylformamide enacted
At the end of November the European Commission issued a regulation EU 2021/2030 amending the REACH Regulation (1907/2006) which restricts the use of the solvent N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF).
DMF is frequently used in the production of synthetic fibres and polyurethane coated fabrics. It should not be confused with the biocide Dimethylfumarate which has formally been restricted since 2012 under REACH and was never approved as a biocide for use in the EU under the BPD/BPR.
The primary reason for the restriction is to protect workers to from the risks associated by dermal and inhalation exposure to DMF.
