Positive vote for a new standard for electrical furniture
IEC 60335 Part 2 -116 Household and similar electrical appliances - Safety - Part 2-116: Particular requirements for furniture with electrically motorised parts has received a positive vote at the Formal Vote stage, meaning that the standard will become an international standard within the next 6 months.
Three countries voted against the standard becoming adopted, France, Sweden and the UK – primarily as the standard does not fully meet the essential health and safety requirements of the Machinery Directive.
Whilst the standard will become an International Standard, it will not become a European Standard at this stage. CENELEC, the European body tasked with developing electrical standards is currently looking at the modifications needed for the standard to meet the Machinery Directive, and will start work on this soon.
