New Standards Meeting Report from Europe
A meeting of the Standards Committee responsible for producing furniture standards, CEN TC207, was recently held in Paris.
The meeting was wide ranging covering current and future development of standards for furniture, as well as an EU approach to developing International Standards (ISO).
A few key highlights are:
There may be issues ahead for the educational furniture standards, as CEN has been tasked with producing a standard for children’s seating by the EU. The EU want the standard to include school seating, but has been excluded within CEN TC 207 as standards already exist (EN 1729 Parts 1 & 2). This may come to a head soon.
For 5 years, led by Levent Caglar, FIRA has been trying to resolve the fact that different committees use different requirements for entrapment and shear and squeeze points. There is still no agreement, however CEN TC 207 WG9, chaired by FIRA’s General Manager, Phil Reynolds, have now been officially tasked with producing a rationale and basic assessment methods for these risks.
