New mattress standard published
A new European Standard for cot mattresses has been published - BS EN 16890: 2017 Children's furniture — Mattresses for cots and cribs — Safety requirements and test methods.
The new standard will replace the current British Standard, BS 1877-10: 2011 + A1: 2012 Domestic bedding. Specification for mattresses and bumpers for children's cots, perambulators and similar domestic articles.
The new standard takes a risk based approach to assessing mattresses and is significantly different to the British Standard and a such conformity to the British Standard will not necessarily confer conformity to the new European Standard. Please also note that the UK has an ‘A deviation’ against the European Standard as the new standard has fire resistance requirements which may be in conflict with the Furniture & Furnishings (Fire) (Safety) Regulations 1988 (as amended) which cover the requirements for mattress fillings.
