New Childcare standard published - Highchairs
A new European Standard for children’s highchairs has been published. BS EN 14988: 2017 Children’s Highchairs. Requirements and test methods replaces the previous standards, BS EN 14988-1; 2006 + A1: 2012 and BS EN 14988-2; 2006 + A1: 2012, with immediate effect.
The new standard combines requirements and test methods in to one standard. In addition the standard has been re-written into a hazard based format with a rationale explaining the need for each test and the hazard it is designed to prevent.
Other changes include:
- Addition of a dynamic strength test
- Improvement for the requirements for high chairs with castors (for contract use)
- Improvement in the restraint requirements.
It should be noted that the Standard also contains fire safety requirements, as such the UK has had to declare an ‘A deviation’ as high chairs are covered by the UK’s Furniture & Furnishings (Fire) (Safety) Regulations, which take precedence over the fire safety requirements in the standard. It should also be noted that France also has declared an ‘A deviation’ due to more stringent fire safety legislation.
