Final standards update for 2018
The Furniture Industry Research Association has published their final Quarterly Standards Update for 2018, which is available to all members of the Association.
The December update confirms the publication of a number of new standards across the furniture sector including:
• BS EN 1022: 2018 Furniture - Seating - Determination of stability
This standard came into effect on 30th November 2018 and replaces the previous 2005 standard. Whilst a standalone standard, having its own requirements, BS EN 1022 is referenced by a number of other seating standards.
• BS EN 1335-2: 2018 Office furniture. Office Work Chair. Safety Requirements
This 2018 version replaces the previous 2009 version of the standard with immediate effect. The standard has been revised to reference the most current test method standards (BS EN 1022: 2018 Furniture. Seating. Determination of strength and durability and also BS EN 1728: 2012 Furniture. Seating. Determination of stability).
• BS EN 16780 Textile child care articles — Safety requirements and test methods for children's cot bumpers
This Standard specifies requirements for the safety of children's cot bumpers used in the children's sleeping environment (un-supervised) when sleeping in a cot or similar product such as a crib or cradle in which a child is contained.
• PD CEN/TR 17292: 2018 Technical report regarding precision data for standards EN 12720, EN 12721, EN 12722, EN 15185 and EN 15186
The document is designed to aid accuracy when carrying out surface finish performance tests according to various standards. It’s aimed at test laboratories, both in-house and independent, and is designed to testing staff have confidence in the results of the tests they are carrying out.
Further standards covered in the update include those related to non-domestic seating / office seating, non-domestic / office storage, educational furniture, writing boards, laboratory furniture, bed and mattresses, domestic seating, domestic tables, domestic storage, kitchens, children's furniture, hardware and finally surface finishes.

The Research Association’s next planned Quarterly Standards Update will be available in March 2019. However, in the interim, their members will be made aware when there are new confirmed standards, revisions to current standards and standards out for consultation.
