Glass in Furniture: Best Practice Guide (FRQG)

The Furniture Retail Quality Group (FRQG), whose members include technologists from many of the leading UK furniture retailers, believe that the withdrawal of the British Standards covering the requirements for glass in furniture has significantly lowered the safety requirements in the UK.

FIRA and the FRQG worked together to develop this guide as a means of maintaining safety levels.

The guide covers requirements for safety, stability, strength and durability for all types of furniture featuring glass for domestic use such as tables, trolleys, wall-hung and free-standing mirrors, shelving systems, wall hanging and other cabinets with a surface area of greater or equal to 0.06 m.

Glass is a product with some inherent risks associated with it, and this guide specifies requirements that go beyond current European Standards, which are based on withdrawn British Standards.

Note: Furniture featuring functions not covered within this guide (e.g. electrical features, lighting etc.), should be assessed in accordance with the most appropriate regulations or standards.

Annex C (Informative) Sample response to toughened glass failures
