Bariatric Seating: Performance and Dimensional Requirement - FIRA Standard FS 058:2017

This FIRA Standard, FS 058:2017 is for all types of bariatric seating for office, hospital, contract and domestic use. It specifies the structural safety, strength, stability and durability of seating for users whose body weight is in the region of 150 kg to 300 kg.

This document also contains 3 informative annexes covering:

• Recommended dimensional requirements
• Recommended design guidelines

  Please note:
• The standard does not contain requirements for riser-recliner seating, ranked seating, seating for educational institutions and work chairs for industrial use. Whilst these uses are excluded from the scope of this document, the requirements contained within this standard may be used as a guide in developing performance and dimensional requirements for such uses.
• Requirements for transport seating, wheelchairs and seating classed as a medical device are not included
• Requirements for the durability of upholstery materials, castors, reclining and tilting mechanisms and seat height adjustment mechanisms are not included.
• This document does not include requirements for the resistance to ageing, degradation, antibacterial/hygiene and flammability.
